The temples here were built between 950 and 1050 A.D. by the Chandela dynasty, which claims descent from the Moon God and a mortal, Hemavati, with whom the God fell in love. The Chandelas built 85 temples and some 22 survive today. Architecturally, the temples have some unique features.
